Dr. Michael Paparella
Dr. Michael Paparella, our founder, took his B.S. and M.D. at the University of Michigan. After serving in Europe, he became a member of the faculty at Harvard Medical School, then at Ohio State University. From 1967 to 1984, he chaired the University of Minnesota’s Department of Otolaryngology, leaving to found this clinic. He has actively practiced otology (care of ears) and otolaryngology (ears, head and neck) for 40-plus years and remains active in research and education. He has authored/edited over 600 scientific publications and 63 books, including many on the topics of Meniere’s disease and chronic ear infection. He has also trained 300 ENT doctors including 28 Professors and Chairmen.

Dr. Oleg Froymovich
Dr. Oleg Froymovich received his B.S. from Columbia University in 1984 and his M.D. from Mount Sinai Medical School in 1988. After internship and residency training in general surgery, he finished his residency in otolaryngology at SUNY Buffalo in 1993 and a fellowship in otology and neurotology at the Paparella Ear Head & Neck Institute in 1994. Now a partner at our clinic, he is board certified in otolaryngology and has special interest in sinus disease, endoscopic sinus surgery, management of disorders of the voice, and hearing, sleep and balance medicine. He has published many peer-reviewed articles and presented courses on such work at meetings of the American Academy of Otolaryngology. |

Dr. Francis Hobson
Dr. Francis Hobson joins us at the Paparella Ear Head & Neck Institute after having graduated from UCLA School of Medicine and completing a year of general surgery training at Howard University in Washington DC, and residency in otolaryngology – head and neck surgery at King-Drew Medical Center, a UCLA affiliate. He was Adjunct Clinical Faculty at Indiana University’s Department of Speech and Hearing and in private practice prior to completing our Otology/Neurotology Fellowship in 2003. Clinically, he is interested in general ENT, sleep medicine, and implantable hearing aids. He is affiliated with the resident teaching program at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Hobson teaches surgery at Regions Hospital in St. Paul.

Dr. Giovanni Casillas
Dr. Giovanni Casillas joined the Paparella Ear Head & Neck Institute in July 2006. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Puerto Rico. He obtained his medical degree and completed his residency in otolaryngology – head and neck surgery at the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine. His clinical interests include ear and sinus disease as well as all other aspects of otolaryngology. He is a member of the American Academy of Otolaryngology Head & Neck Surgery, the Triological Society and the American Medical Association. Dr. Casillas enjoys spending time with his family, music and hiking. He is fluent in Spanish.

Dr. Natasha Pollak
Dr. Natasha Pollak completed her undergraduate and masters degrees at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. She then earned a medical degree at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee. Most recently, she completed residency in Otolaryngology - head and neck surgery at the University of Missouri. She joined the Paparella Ear Head & Neck Institute in July 2007. Her clinical and research interests include management of chronic ear disease, hearing restoration, vestibulocochlear physiology, cochlear implants and other implantable hearing devices. She is an active member of the American Academy of Otolaryngology as well as the Triological Society, frequently serves on professional committees and has published several peer-reviewed research articles. Dr. Pollak enjoys amateur astronomy. |

Dr. Helen Xu
Dr. Helen Xu received her master degrees and medical degree at the Zhejiang University School of Medicine in China. She completed her residency in Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery at the Charles R. Drew University, School of Medicine and Science in Los Angeles. Dr. Xu stayed in the same institute after her residency as an assistant professor and attending physician with active medical education for residents and medical students prior to joining the Paparella Ear Head & Neck Institute. Clinically, Dr. Xu is interested in chronic ear disease, hearing restoration, surgical management of Meniere's disease, minimal invasive thyroid surgery with endoscopic approach, sinus disease, general otolaryngology, and alternative medicine like acupuncture and herb medicine. Dr. Xu is also actively involved in international medicine and has an appointment as a visiting professor at Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital in Zhejiang University School of Medicine in China. Dr. Xu enjoys photography as much as she enjoys medicine. |

Dr. Markus Gapany
Dr. Markus Gapany received his medical degree from the Hebrew University - Hadassah Medical School. He took his surgery training at SUNY - Downstate Medical Center, and otolaryngology - head and neck surgery training at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, which he completed in 1991. In 1992, he completed his fellowship training in head and neck oncologic and reconstructive surgery at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, and the same year joined the Department of Otolaryngology at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Gapany is board certified in adult and pediatric otolaryngology (ENT) as well as head and neck tumor and facial plastic and reconstructive surgery. He is a Fellow of American College of Surgeons and a Fellow of American Society of Head and Neck Surgeons. He is an Associate Professor of Otolaryngology at the University of Minnesota and Chief of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery at the Minneapolis VA Medical Center. Dr. Gapany's expertise includes head and neck tumor surgery, reconstructive and plastic surgery of head, neck and face as well as thyroid and parathyroid surgery. Special expertise includes minimally invasive, micro-vascular and laser surgery as well as implantation of vagus nerve stimulator device (VNS) for epilepsy and depression. |
